Instant Pot Turkey & Black Bean Chili
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 3-4 1x
Description
This Instant Pot Turkey & Black Bean Chili just made chili night so much better. This healthier take on chili is made in the Instant Pot with ground turkey and black beans for an easy yet delicious meal any night of the week.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Avocado Oil
- 454 g Lean Ground Turkey
- 2 Tbsp Tomato Paste
- 2 Tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 Tbsp Cumin (ground)
- 1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika
- 1/2 Tbsp Dried Oregano
- 1/2 tsp Salt (Real Salt or Sea Salt)
- 1 Yellow Onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
- 1 medium Red Bell Pepper, diced (about 3/4 cup)
- 1 large Tomato, diced (about 1 cup)
- 3 Garlic, minced or grated
- 1 cups Vegetable Broth, no-salt-added or low-sodium
- 2 cups Black Beans, from the can; drained and rinsed well
- 1/2 Lime, juiced
Instructions
- Turn the Instant Pot to ‘Saute’ and heat until warm.
- Add oil to the pot then brown the turkey, breaking it up as it cooks until no longer pink. Leave any juices or drippings from the meat in the pot.
- Add the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano and salt and stir to combine with the turkey. Add onion, tomato, peppers and garlic, stir to combine and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the tomatoes start to release their juices.
- Add the vegetable broth and scrape any browned bits off the bottom of the pot. Stir in the beans. Allow the chili to come to a gentle boil before turning off sauté mode.
- Cover with the lid, set the valve to sealing and pressure cook on high for 12 minutes (it takes my instant pot about eight minutes to come to pressure), then carefully release the pressure manually.
- Stir in lime juice and season with additional salt or pepper if needed.
- Turkey chili is good in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container or freeze for longer.
Notes
Prefer a thicker chili? Consistency of this chili can vary depending on how much liquid is released from the tomato and bell pepper during cooking. If your chili is too soupy for your liking, simply switch the Instant Pot to ‘Saute’ mode (after releasing pressure and removing the lid) and reduce some of the liquid for 8 to 10 minutes before serving.

HOW TO MAKE THIS PCOS-FRIENDLY INSTANT POT TURKEY CHILI WITH BLACK BEANS RECIPE…
Here are some tips to help make great turkey & black bean chili…
The Instant Pot is really the star of this dish – it makes this turkey chili an absolute dream. The turkey becomes so tender and flavourful. The broth is juicy and flavourful. The veggies and beans are tender. All in only 12 minutes of cooking time.
(If you want to make a stove-top version, this beef & bean chili recipe is similar – increase the broth slightly and follow the instructions there.)
I used ground turkey here because it’s a meat that I usually always have in my freezer. But ground chicken, beef or pork would all be welcomed substitutions for turkey if needed.
This spice blend is rather classic here – chili powder, cumin, oregano and smoked paprika – but I love the simplicity of using just a handful of pantry spices. I always reach for pantry spices instead of store-bought seasoning blends as these are often loaded with tons of salt, sugar, flavour enhancers and preservatives. Keep the spice cupboard well-stocked and pass on those pre-made seasoning packets.
I almost always use Vegetable broth when making soups, stews and chilis. This is because it’s the one I always have on hand (either my favourite boxed version or homemade). Chicken broth could definitely be used here instead. Just make sure your broth is no-salt-added or low-sodium and that there isn’t any sugar added.
The black beans give this chili a classic flare. I use canned black beans to cut down on cooking time and because canned black beans are an ingredient I always keep stocked in the pantry. If black beans aren’t your thing or you don’t have any you can leave them out for a bean-free chili or use another canned or cooked bean instead – kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans or even chickpeas would work in a pinch.
The lime juice is a must – it balances the flavours of the spices so well. I like this chili topped with avocado, chopped cilantro and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
