Because cherry season may actually be my favourite season…
Summer just isn’t summer without a month of all things cherry. Mostly just straight up cherries and late afternoon contests of who can spit their pits the furthest… because we are all adults and contests like these are what really matter in July.
But today I switch up my bowl of cherries routine and opt for an icy cold chocolate cherry smoothie instead.
I’m talking a completely vegan and gluten free smoothie that’s heavy on rich, dark chocolate and lots of ripe cherries. Sweetened with some frozen banana and just the littlest pinch of cinnamon that you would think wouldn’t make a difference… but friends, don’t skip the cinnamon. It’s a smoothie that could be a delicious dessert but an even better sweet breakfast treat.
It’s like cherries for breakfast… or dessert!
I know I have been a little crazy with the smoothies lately (hello Tropical Banana, Yogurt and Berry and Chocolate Banana smoothies!!), but I can’t say I’m complaining. It’s so hot. Because, well, it’s July (duh?!). And I am complete baby when it comes hot and humid weather. And the last thing this grumpy and hot person wants to do in July is stand anywhere near a hot stove element to later have to eat hot food. Ugh – just the thought right now makes me want to eat breakfast inside my refrigerator.
But worry not. My hot and humid breakfast troubles are solved with a bag of frozen cherries (picked from the one and only cherry tree remaining at the Pikor Paradise Farms in little Grimsby, Ontario no less) and my NutriBullet. Smoothies solve all problems, people!
MORE ABOUT THIS CHOCOLATE CHERRY SMOOTHIE RECIPE
Cherries. Cherries. Cherries.
I’m sure my dad knows the exact varietal of his last tree but for me it really doesn’t matter. I love them all. And it takes all my will-power and self-control to stop myself from diving face-first into all the cherries.
(Fun Fact: I was the worst cherry-picker Pikor Paradise Farms had ever seen. More cherries made it into my mouth than any basket and the proof was definitely all over my face and my clothes every single day. But it was delicious and I regret none of it.)
In order to savour those freshly picked cherries all year long, the fam likes to freeze a whole bunch. Last year, we had a huge pitting party followed by lots of bagging and lots of freezing. And then lots of cherry pie and cherry cheesecake parfait eating and chocolate cherry smoothie drinking all year long!
When using frozen or fresh cherries, please, please, please double check that there are no pits going into your smoothie. There always seems to be a one cherry that still has it’s pit and, well, for lack of a better word, it’s the pits.
Wanting to up your smoothie-goodness game? Add some of that leafy green spinach. (Side Note: Adding green spinach to a reddish-brown smoothie will yield a really odd brown-green colour. If you can get over the colour, you’re golden.) Or add a scoop of your favourite protein powder or a squeeze of honey for sweetness, if that’s your thang.
And all that chocolatey goodness! I use cocoa powder for that super dark and intense chocolatey flavour. There’s something to be said about that chocolate-cherry combination. I loved it in this chocolate cherry trail mix recipe and I really love it in this gluten free and vegan chocolate cherry smoothie recipe!
Can cherry goodness get better?!
